If you’re not subscribed to my email list you missed the announcement of my Eastern Sierra Fall Color: Composition and Creativity Among the Aspens workshop next fall. We had such a great response to this offering that it sold out the first day! But the good news is that we decided to run a second edition of this course from October 20-23, 2013, and there are still a few spots available.
I made the accompanying photograph during the first edition of this workshop last October. We photographed this aspen grove late in the afternoon as the lowering sun backlit the yellow leaves. This was my favorite image from that spot, but I saw many interesting, unusual compositions by everyone else that afternoon, both on the back of people’s cameras and later during image reviews. You can see some of the participant’s photographs in this Flickr group.
We’ll visit more great locations like this next October; I know some beautiful spots that most photographers miss. But it’s one thing to get to a good location, and another to take advantage of those opportunities. That’s really what this workshop is about — tapping into your imagination and innate creativity. We’ll work on honing that most essential photography skill — composition — but also delve into important subjects that are rarely discussed or written about, like developing your creative process, and understanding the language of photography.

Jon, I’m glad you enjoyed the workshop — it was great having you with us! Looking forward to seeing you again in October, one way or another (see my email). 🙂
Ditto. Looking forward to following you around again 🙂
Thanks Eric — looking forward to seeing you again!
I keep missing the color window on the east side. Last November I arrived the day after what must have been an apocalyptic windstorm. The ranger at Bodie said: “Lots of leaves yesterday. Last night the wind broke 70 mph.” There wasn’t a leaf on Conway Summit 🙁
This time!
An make that another slot gone — i signed up last night. I attended an afternoon field session with Michael two years ago at the Moab Photography Symposium and found him to be a thoughtful and thorough instructor. I’m looking forward to learning, growing, and expanding my photographic horizons in the Eastern Sierras this Fall!
