I’m honored to have a portfolio of my images, plus an in-depth interview, included in the latest issue of Photograph digital magazine from Craft & Vision. Regular readers have probably seen most of the images in the portfolio before, but it’s nice to view them all together, and I thought the questions the interviewer asked were interesting and thought-provoking.
There are three other portfolios in this issue – a fascinating and diverse collection. I enjoy looking at different kinds of photography, and especially liked Jordan Manley’s portfolio, as it blends elements of sports, photo-journalism, and landscape in an artful way.
And of course this issue includes a selection of high-quality articles, the kind I’ve come to expect from Photograph. One of my favorite writers about landscape photography (and one of my favorite contemporary photographers), Guy Tal, has a wonderful piece called “Configure Your Photography.” He starts by talking about how we configure our cameras or software tools to our preferred way of working, and proposes that we can also configure our image-making approach so that it’s conducive to the kind of photographs we want to make.
Another of my favorite photography writers, David duChemin, is at it again with an article titled “Improvisation,” about how using the principles of comedy improvisation can help your photography. John Paul Caponigro also has an interesting piece called “Size,” about how size and the visual weight of elements in the frame – and the size of the frame itself – affect the photograph’s message. On a more practical level, Martin Bailey writes about selecting the optimal focus mode. And of course there’s much more.
Normally Photograph magazine is $8.00 (Canadian), but since it’s just been launched you can get Issue 13 for only $6.00 until midnight Pacific Time on June 24th. There’s no code to enter – that’s just the price until that time. You can also get the entire collection, all 13 issues, for 25% off.
I hope you enjoy the portfolio and interview – and the rest of the magazine!

I bought a print of that image last year while visiting the Valley. Can’t wait to get the issue.
